Suppose you have the need to rip a DVD in 2024 on Linux – not too common I guess, but sometimes it can happen. Purely out of curiosity, I did some research and testing – I’d never never break copyright laws, obviously. I knew that you could use Handbrake for that kind of task – you just needed to install libdvdcss to break the encryption. But with Handbrake being distributed as a Flatpak, it seems to be a problem to make this work. None of the guides available online seem to provide a easy working solution – at least that’s what my tests suggested.
I did see MakeMKV mentioned in some guides but I couldn’t find a usable linux version – and I couldn’t be bothered to fight my way through manual compilation of a fifteen year old tutorial.
